Dr Rakesh Rai has trained extensively in some of the best medical centres in the world. After completing his general surgical residency at King Edward Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India, he went to the UK to receive higher surgical training. In the UK, Dr Rai carried out basic research on radiofrequency ablation of liver tumours, leading to the award of MD by the University of Newcastle.

He underwent specialist registrar training for 6 years, gaining experience in vascular surgery, HPB surgery, and transplant surgery. He worked in the HPB unit at Royal Free Hospital, London, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. He passed his FRCS (intercollegiate) exam, was awarded CCT (certificate of completion of training), and was registered on the specialist register in GMC.

Following his training in the UK, Dr. Rai moved to the USA and joined the University of Tennessee at Memphis for his transplant surgery fellowship at Methodist Transplant Institute (James D Eason Institute of transplantation). He spent almost two and a half years training in Liver, kidney, and pancreas transplant and HPB surgery. Methodist Transplant Institute is one of the top ten liver transplant centres in the USA.

Following his training in the USA, he got an International fellowship to train in living donor liver transplantation at Asan Medical Centre in Seoul, South Korea. Asan Medical Centre is the largest liver transplant centre in the world in terms of volume.

Dr Rai spent some time as a consultant at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, before returning to India.

Before joining KCH, Dr. Rai was a busy HPB and transplant surgeon attached to a few of the most prestigious private hospitals in Mumbai, India, such as Fortis Group of Hospitals and PD Hinduja Hospital.

Dr Rai has treated patients with Liver and pancreatic diseases not only from India but also from patients from Africa, the Middle East and Bangladesh travelling to Mumbai for advanced surgical treatment.

Dr Rai has published in International journals and has delivered scientific lectures in many countries. He has also authored a book on Radio-frequency ablation of liver tumours.

Dr Rai has been a postgraduate teacher at the MUHS (Maharashtra University of Health Sciences) and has trained general surgeons in HPB surgery. He has also trained surgeons from Uganda who the government selected to train in HPB surgery.
